Wetsuit Maintenance Tips

You can expect to pay between $100 and $400 for a wetsuit. For most people, this would be a lot of money. Because of the expense, these people would want their wetsuit to last as long as possible. For this to happen, these people should learn how to take good care of it. As your wetsuit ages, you should expect it to naturally shrink and stiffen. This cannot be avoided no matter how well you take care of it. To prevent your wetsuit from shrinking or stiffening even more, you should rinse it with fresh water right after you get out of the water. Another benefit of rinsing it is preventing it from developing a bad odor. Wetsuits that have not been washed right after they have been used can really stink. So you should rinse it immediately right after you get out of the water. You should try to remove any salt or dirt that may be found in the inner lining of the wetsuit. The salt or dirt can inhibit the ability of the wetsuit to form a layer of water between the suit and your skin that is meant to keep you warm. Using shampoo or Armor All can be an effective way to clean the suit. There are some people who pee in their wetsuit because they do not want to go through the trouble of taking it off and then putting it back on. Other people pee in their wetsuit because the urine can keep them warm on really cold days. But peeing in your wetsuit is something that you should avoid as much as possible. It can make an unwashed wetsuit smell even worse. It is a very hard odor to try to eliminate. You should not use a detergent or soap to remove the odor. These products can degrade the neoprene rubber. You should also avoid using bleach. There are affordable products on the market that can eliminate the bacteria that caused the odor without damaging your wetsuit. You should make sure that your wetsuit is not exposed to the sun anymore than it has to be. The ultraviolet rays and the heat from the sun can cause it to stiffen and crack. You should never dry your wetsuit by putting it in a dryer or on a radiator. Instead, you should hang your wetsuit on a wide, sturdy plastic hanger to allow it to drip dry after you are finished rinsing it. You should not hang your wetsuit on a thin wire hanger because it can rust and damage the wetsuit. There are hangers on the market that are specially designed to dry your wetsuit faster than a regular hanger can. A wetsuit that is dry on the inside is easier to put on and is better at keeping your body warm during cold days. So you should allow it to dry by turning it inside out. All wetsuits develop tears after extended use. Many times these tears occur because of your fingernails. Constantly inspecting your wetsuit for tears is very important. It is better to find tears when they are still small because you can use neoprene glue to seal them. Bigger tears may be too big to be sealed. You should be careful about how you store your wetsuit. You should never fold up your wetsuit and put it in a drawer. You should also refrain from putting a heavy object on it. Either of these things can put permanent creases in the suit and hurt the ability of the wetsuit to keep you warm. If you want to store your wetsuit, you should either put it on a sturdy plastic hanger or lay it out flat.
